Interior Design FAQs

WHY HIRE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?

Often we find people wondering exactly how Interior Design fits into their project. With the right team, your project will progress with ease. We are knowledgeable about standard building practices and working alongside the trades. The benefits of hiring a designer far outweigh the investment per project:

Here’s how!

Planning the details well in advance will minimize project timelines and errors during construction thus saving money and time, all while making the process more enjoyable for everyone. A great designer looks out for both the contractor and the client; we work to bridge the gap! The contractor is there to build following the design plans, if you don’t provide a plan you chance a huge headache. They will now have to take the time to help you source items, materials, and create a plan. Designers also have access to designer-only resources. In the end, a designer space will look, feel, and function optimally while adding value along the way!

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND + WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS?

Our principal designer, Celeste, has not only acted as the designer but she has also drafted and submitted blueprints to attain permits, along with managed subcontractors, and completed projects as the general contractor under our company’s Oregon GC license. However, she has since honed in on what truly inspires her and narrowed the scope of work accordingly! Additionally, Celeste holds a degree and two technical certifications in design. As a team, we truly enjoy the construction process and the experience of collaboration. We feel accomplished when the project is fun for our clients and less stressful for the builders that we work with. To do this, we’ve created streamlined processes using advanced project management software to optimize organization, create spec drawings, and visuals. HOW LONG DO PROJECTS NORMALLY LAST?

This largely depends on the scope of the project. Occasionally there are delays caused by weather, vendor sick days or vacation days, factory errors, and other unpredictable influences, that are out of our control. The client, as well as, all professionals hired to work on the project are expected to not cause unreasonable delays in the project.

HOW WILL WE COMMUNICATE DURING MY PROJECT?

The majority of communication will take place utilizing your client portal. It’s here that we can leave project notes, comments, and questions. This will keep everything organized. We will always do our best to respond as soon as possible. Design appointments, video conferences, phone calls, and text messages are limited to weekdays. It’s important to note that text messages are intended for communication related to upcoming appointments only; No design-related decisions should take place in this form for the success of your project as the information could get “lost in the shuffle.”

CAN I SHOP ON MY OWN?

Overall, this will be a collaborative effort and we are always open to your ideas. With that in mind, you have hired us to design and complete a vision for your space and we kindly ask that you do not select or purchase items on your own because that selection may not be a fit for the design, space, or budget. When appropriate, you will receive a detailed Specification for items to be purchased direct.

WHAT ADDITIONAL COSTS CAN I EXPECT?

We do our best to give you a full cost outlook, but additional costs such as storage, shipping, installation, or unexpected labor, and time do occasionally happen.

DO YOU WORK WITH CONTRACTORS?

We enjoy working with our preferred architects and contractors but are open to working with new teams. Project Management is within our scope of work and we often provide our trades with a standard PM fee. We love working with other design professionals to create spaces that align with our client’s needs. Iron Roots Design can provide specialty contractor services in relation to our custom metal fabrication; See our portfolio here: Fabrication Portfolio

HOW DO I PLACE AN ORDER?

Once you receive a Proposal you have 3 days to either accept or decline the item(s). For acceptance, a signed copy of the proposal, or approval within your client portal, along with full payment is required to place an order. No item will be ordered by Designer until Designer receives item(s) approval and full payment.

CAN I CHANGE MY MIND AFTER AN ORDER IS PLACED?
Most often orders cannot be canceled or refunded. In the event that a full refund can be attained, you may cancel the order and receive a refund for the cost of the item minus any applicable fees. Custom orders are non-refundable.
WHAT IF I DECIDE MID-PROJECT I WANT TO ADD MORE TO THE SCOPE?

Increasing the scope is usually not a problem! We can add an Addendum to the scope of work to outline the additional tasks to be completed along with any associated fees.

WHAT IF I HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT AN ITEM?

Please bring these to our attention immediately and we will discuss your concerns, and if necessary, find a more desirable solution. The decision about what is purchased and installed in your space is ultimately yours.

WHAT ABOUT BUDGET?

We often help clients create an anticipated budget at the start of a project. Having a budget in mind is very important for the project to run smoothly and for your expectations to be met. If we are working with a builder, we are always happy to review bids and help with the value engineering process as well.

WHAT IS A PRODUCT SPECIFICATION + A PRODUCT PROPOSAL?

A Specification is a document that we provide the details for you to purchase an item yourself. You will pay the vendor directly. A Proposal is when we are requesting payment for items so that we can purchase the item on your behalf.

WHAT IS INSTALL DAY?

This is the most exciting day of the project! We personally perform one large installation of all your items. This includes all materials, and/or furniture, and accessories purchased. Clients are responsible for all shipping, storage, and delivery fees.
